San Antonio: A Taste of Europe in the Heart of Texas
San Antonio, you’ve completely stolen our hearts! This Thanksgiving trip is proving to be more than just a holiday getaway; it’s a beautiful echo of our honeymoon in Europe 10 years ago, also taken around Thanksgiving. The city’s unique blend of history, culture, and vibrant atmosphere has us completely captivated.
Missions National Historical Park: Stepping Back in Time
Our exploration of the San Antonio Missions National Historical Park transported us back in time, evoking the grandeur of Ancient Rome. The park preserves four of the five Spanish colonial missions in the San Antonio area. (The Alamo is the fifth mission, but it is not within the park.) As Texas’s only UNESCO World Heritage Site, the park offered a fascinating glimpse into the early days of San Antonio.
We walked through the grounds of these 18th-century missions, marveling at the architecture and imagining life as it was centuries ago. The sheer scale and historical significance of these sites made for a truly humbling experience. Biking the Mission Trail is a great way to see all the missions.

The River Walk: San Antonio’s Sparkling Heart
As dusk settled, we found ourselves drawn to the dazzling River Walk, which stretches 15 miles. Lined with shops, restaurants, and hotels, it is reminiscent of Venice, but on a smaller, equally enchanting scale. Strolling along the riverbank, we were captivated by the twinkling lights reflecting on the water. The festive atmosphere was infectious as we watched the floats parade.

Brackenridge Park’s Japanese Tea Garden: An Oasis of Calm
The Japanese Tea Garden in Brackenridge Park is a must-do, offering a serene oasis with walking paths, a 60-foot waterfall, stone arch bridges, pagoda, and koi ponds. The garden is free and open daily from dawn to dusk. When entering, visitors are greeted by a Torii gate that symbolizes the transition into a sacred space. Jingu House Cafe, next to the stone pavilion, serves sandwiches, salads, Asian dishes, and a variety of teas. (We were so immersed in the experience we forgot to take photos!)
Our Takeaways
Whether you’re seeking historical exploration, cultural immersion, or thrilling adventures, San Antonio has something for everyone. It’s truly a city that seamlessly blends history, culture, and European charm right in the heart of Texas.
