Book Review: Funny Story

Title: Funny Story
Author: Emily Henry
Length: 384 pages
Genre: Romance
Plot Summary: Daphne Vincent, a children’s librarian, unexpectedly finds herself dumped by her fiancé Peter when he realizes he’s in love with his childhood best friend Petra. Left homeless and heartbroken in Waning Bay, Michigan, Daphne ends up moving in with Miles, Petra’s ex-boyfriend. What starts as an awkward living arrangement transforms into a tentative friendship. The two devise a plan to make their exes jealous by pretending to be in a relationship, posting deliberately misleading photos of their summer adventures together. As they spend more time together, Daphne and Miles develop a genuine connection, helping each other heal and rediscover themselves in the process.
Review: Somewhere along the storyline, I grimaced thinking we’re going to get a rebound relationship when I just want the author to explore self-discovery and friendship. Towards the end, Henry manages to do just that and more. The romance did materialize, but it wasn’t a rushed rebound, it was part of Daphne’s character growth. There’s witty humor and the characters are positively charming. Overall, it’s a perfectly satisfying beach read. But I don’t often desire beach reads.
