A Celestial Touch: Painting the Northern Lights
When we were designing Khang’s bedroom, we wanted it to be a space that felt both magical and personal to him. His love for all things celestial — stars, planets, and the wonders of space — became the inspiration for his room’s theme. From his navy blue bedding adorned with planets to the moon wall décor, every piece was chosen to fuel his imagination. But there was one thing missing — a statement piece of art that reflected his love for the night sky.
That’s when I decided to paint something just for him.
Inspired by our family’s love of travel and nature, I chose to create a painting of the Northern Lights over an icy landscape. The auroras have always fascinated me — the way they dance across the sky, illuminating the darkness with their ethereal glow. It felt like the perfect piece to bring a sense of wonder into his room.

This painting became a labor of love, blending deep blues, greens, and purples to capture the magic of the auroras. The first few sessions were focused on laying the foundation — painting the dark, shadowy mountains and icy water. These base layers were essential in creating depth, making the lights pop against the night sky. One of the most rewarding moments was adding the final touches — tiny specks of white to represent distant stars and highlights on the ice to mimic the reflection of the sky. Suddenly, the entire piece came to life. The cool tones fit seamlessly with Khang’s celestial-themed space, and when we framed it and hung it on his wall, it felt like the perfect finishing touch. Seeing his excitement when he first saw it made every brushstroke worth it.

Now, whenever Khang looks at his painting, I hope it sparks his curiosity about the universe, inspiring him to dream big and explore the endless possibilities beyond the stars.
